Word of the Week…en Français!
Michigan’s French-Canadian habitant heritage and that of the entire Great Lakes region and really all of New France, is the story of its people. Habitant is a term used by early French settlers in New France to describe themselves. They were mainly farmers working on ribbon farms and their large families were key to the survival of French culture in North America. Also, the main nickname for the hockey team the Montreal Canadiens: Les Habitants, abbreviated as the Habs.
