Cove or little bay; also where the prairie pushes into woodland, forming a small bay or clearing. Frequently found as a place name including l’Anse in Baraga County, Michigan; l’Anse aux Meadows (Newfoundland); l’Anse Grise, Louisiana; and l’Anse à la Graisse – the original name of New Madrid, Missouri.
