Small and large mouth bass. This Algonquin loanword is known in modern Quebec French and was, at one time, in use in the Detroit area. Also seen as archigan, meaning “one which fights.” Place names include, Achigan Lake, Ontario (just north of Sault Ste. Marie), Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan in Quebec, on La rivière de l’Achigan, a tributary of the Assomption River. Sources: Marcel Beneteau, Mots choisis and Wikipedia.
